Diddy Accuses CNN of Altering & Deleting Cassie Assault Footage

diddy accuses cnn altering cassie assault footage

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul and founder of Bad Boy Records, is facing serious legal troubles, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and forced labor charges. Just two months before his highly anticipated trial, his legal team has launched a new offensive, accusing CNN of altering crucial video evidence related to a 2016 incident involving his former girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura.

The defense claims that CNN not only manipulated the footage to make Combs look worse but also destroyed the original copy after making edits. This bombshell accusation, made in a joint letter to Judge Arun Subramanian by Combs’ defense team and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, comes ahead of a March 14 pre-trial hearing. The stakes could not be higher, as Combs faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

Defense Claims CNN Tampered with Video Evidence

In a striking move, Combs’ legal team argues that forensic analysis proves CNN altered key elements of the hotel surveillance video, which allegedly depicts Combs physically assaulting Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway nearly nine years ago. According to the defense:

  • The timestamp on the footage was covered or removed.
  • The sequence of events in the video was modified.
  • The playback speed was increased, making the assault appear more aggressive than it allegedly was in real-time.
  • CNN obtained and edited the only known copy of the surveillance footage before allegedly destroying the original.

These claims, if proven, could significantly impact the case against Combs. The defense hopes to discredit the video evidence and ultimately have it dismissed before it can be presented to a jury.

CNN Responds: “We Never Altered the Video”

CNN has strongly refuted these allegations. In an official statement, a CNN spokesperson said, “CNN never altered the video and did not destroy the original copy of the footage, which was retained by the source.”

The network stands by its reporting, emphasizing that it aired the footage in May 2024—months before Combs was arrested. The video, first broadcast by CNN journalist Elizabeth Wagmeister, shows a partially clothed Combs chasing Ventura down a hallway before violently assaulting her. The footage immediately caused public outrage, intensifying the legal scrutiny surrounding Combs.

The 2016 Incident: A Key Piece of Evidence

The footage in question stems from an alleged attack at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles in 2016. According to Ventura and federal prosecutors, the incident occurred following a forced group sex session, which she tried to escape. In the widely circulated video, Combs is seen kicking and striking Ventura repeatedly.

After the video was released in May 2024, Combs issued a public apology via Instagram, stating:

“My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help. I got into therapy, going to rehab.”

However, as his legal troubles intensified, Combs has since attempted to challenge the authenticity and significance of the footage. His lawyers now argue that the video does not depict an assault but rather “consensual adult behavior” that has been unfairly misconstrued.

Combs’ Shifting Defense Strategy

Since his arrest on September 16, 2024, Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Over the past several months, his legal team has taken an increasingly aggressive approach, seeking to undermine both the prosecution and media narratives surrounding the case.

In January 2025, Combs’ lawyers described the allegations against him as a case of the government attempting to “police non-conforming sexual activity.” They claimed that the video footage actually supports Combs’ argument that Ventura was a willing participant in their relationship and intimate encounters.

Additionally, Combs’ attorneys have accused federal officials of conducting “underhanded tactics” in their investigation. They have pointed to the March 25, 2024, raids on Combs’ Miami and Los Angeles homes as examples of excessive and unjust law enforcement actions. The defense has also accused prosecutors of leaking the 2016 hotel footage to CNN, a claim the government has denied.

Race and Legal Bias Claims

In an effort to frame the case as a broader social issue, Combs’ defense team has suggested that he is being unfairly targeted because of his race and wealth. In a legal filing from February 19, 2025, his attorneys argued:

“Mr. Combs has been singled out because he is a powerful Black man, and he is being prosecuted for conduct that regularly goes unpunished.”

The filing also criticizes the use of the Mann Act—originally enacted in 1910 to combat forced prostitution—stating that it has historically been used in racially biased ways. Combs’ legal team suggests that the prosecution’s application of this law against him is a continuation of that pattern.

More Legal Trouble: Additional Charges and Lawsuits

Beyond the federal criminal case, Combs is facing over 25 separate lawsuits accusing him of various forms of misconduct, including sexual assault, battery, and coercion.

One particularly damning claim surfaced in Ventura’s civil lawsuit, which alleged that Combs paid $50,000 to obtain the hotel surveillance footage the day after the 2016 incident. This lawsuit was settled within 24 hours for a reported $30 million payout to Ventura.

The accumulating legal challenges have severely damaged Combs’ career. Several brands and corporate partners have cut ties with him, and his music streams and airplay have plummeted. Furthermore, Howard University, which previously honored Combs, has revoked his honorary degree in response to the allegations.

Upcoming Trial and What’s Next

With the trial set to begin on May 5, 2025, the next several weeks will be crucial for both the prosecution and defense. The upcoming pre-trial hearings will determine whether the 2016 hotel footage will be admissible in court. If the defense succeeds in having it dismissed, it could weaken the government’s case significantly.

Despite multiple bail attempts, Judge Arun Subramanian has repeatedly denied Combs’ requests for release, citing the severity of the charges and potential flight risk.

As Combs fights for his freedom, the controversy surrounding the alleged CNN video manipulation continues to add complexity to an already high-profile case. The legal battles, media scrutiny, and public reactions are expected to intensify as the trial date approaches.

A Case That Could Shape Legal Precedents

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ criminal case is not just about one man—it has sparked broader discussions about media ethics, racial biases in the justice system, and the handling of high-profile criminal cases. As the trial moves forward, the outcomes of the court’s decisions on evidence, legal arguments, and racial bias claims will be closely watched.

With the possibility of life behind bars, Combs’ defense is employing every strategy to fight the charges. Whether the accusations against CNN will hold up in court remains to be seen, but the case itself is shaping up to be one of the most significant celebrity trials in recent history.
