Studio Moves to Protect Blake Lively Amid Legal Controversy

amazon shields blake lively from backlash

Amazon Prime Video has quietly disabled the comments section on YouTube for the official trailer of its upcoming mystery-comedy sequel, Another Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. The trailer was released on April 15, 2025, on Prime Video’s official channel — but unlike previous film trailers from the platform, viewers were unable to share reactions, praise, or criticisms in the comments section.

The move has sparked widespread discussion and speculation among fans and industry insiders. Many believe Amazon is attempting to shield Lively from potential public backlash due to the high-profile legal battle she is currently engaged in with actor-director Justin Baldoni.

As of now, Amazon has not released an official statement explaining why the comments were disabled. Page Six reportedly reached out to Amazon for clarification but received no immediate response.

Blake Lively Returns in Sequel to 2018’s Dark Comedy Hit

Another Simple Favor serves as the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2018 film A Simple Favor, directed by Paul Feig. In the sequel, Lively reprises her role as Emily Nelson — a fashionable and mysterious PR executive — while Kendrick returns as Stephanie Smothers, the quirky single mom and vlogger who becomes entangled in Emily’s complex world.

The new installment continues the darkly comedic, noir-infused storytelling of the original. While full plot details remain under wraps, the trailer hints at another twisted mystery filled with secrets, deception, and fashionable flair.

Set to premiere on May 1, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video, the sequel is expected to draw significant attention — not only for its star-studded cast and stylish direction but also because of the ongoing real-life controversy surrounding its lead actress.

Lively’s Legal Showdown with Justin Baldoni: What We Know So Far

Blake Lively, 37, is currently embroiled in a contentious legal battle with Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the director of the 2024 film It Ends With Us, which was based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover. In December 2024, Blake Lively initiated a civil lawsuit in California Superior Court, leveling accusations against Justin Baldoni.

  • Sexual harassment

  • Retaliation

  • Intentional infliction of emotional distress

  • Invasion of privacy

  • Negligent hiring and supervision

  • These are just a few of the allegations.

Baldoni, according to Lively, repeatedly violated her professional boundaries and created a toxic and unsafe environment on set. The suit asserts that Baldoni did not take her complaints seriously and faced retaliation after she voiced her concerns internally.

In a strongly worded response, Baldoni, 41, publicly denied all accusations. He insisted that the claims were false and defamatory, and soon after, he filed a libel lawsuit against The New York Times for its coverage of Lively’s allegations. Baldoni argued that the newspaper failed to fact-check claims, causing substantial damage to his reputation and career.

Accusations of Defamation, Extortion, and Celebrity Power Moves

The situation escalated further in January 2025, when Baldoni filed a second lawsuit, this time naming not just Lively but also her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, and her long-time publicist, Leslie Sloane. In this filing, Baldoni accused the trio of

  • Defamation

  • Extortion

  • Attempted character assassination

The lawsuit also suggested that the high-profile couple may have used their close relationship with global superstar Taylor Swift to exert behind-the-scenes influence over the production of It Ends With Us. Baldoni claimed Swift’s involvement, though unofficial, created pressure on the production team and shaped key creative and logistical decisions on set.

To further his defense and restore public confidence, Baldoni launched a public-facing website in early 2025. On this platform, he published what he described as “unedited behind-the-scenes footage” of himself and Lively dancing and joking together, arguing that these clips refute her allegations of a hostile environment. The site also includes screenshots of alleged text conversations between the two, intended to illustrate a previously friendly and cooperative dynamic.

Industry Response and Public Reaction

Industry Response and Public Reaction

The legal saga has left Hollywood divided. While some fans and industry figures have voiced support for Lively, praising her for speaking out about alleged misconduct, others have criticized the handling of the situation on both sides. Baldoni’s move to release private messages and behind-the-scenes footage has been called both strategic and ethically questionable.

Notably, the case has also reignited conversations about power dynamics, consent, and accountability in the entertainment industry, especially as it pertains to high-profile productions led by A-list talent.

Trial Date Set for March 2026

The legal proceedings are expected to stretch over the next year, with a trial date scheduled for March 2026. The case, which involves multiple high-profile celebrities, is likely to be closely followed by the media, legal experts, and the public alike.

If the trial moves forward as expected, testimonies, documents, and potentially damaging details about the making of It Ends With Us could become public records — further influencing public opinion about all parties involved.

Can the Film’s Release Overcome the Controversy?

Despite the off-screen controversy, Another Simple Favor is pushing ahead with its May 1 release on Prime Video. The film, which mixes dark comedy, mystery, and fashion-forward intrigue, was expected to be one of Amazon Studios’ major streaming draws for spring 2025.

However, the platform is clearly taking a cautious approach by intentionally muting online discussion, as evidenced by the disabling of YouTube comments. Whether this strategy helps the film avoid controversy or draws more attention remains to be seen.

Another Simple Favor is preparing for release amidst a backdrop of legal drama and public scrutiny. Blake Lively’s return to the screen is being closely watched — not just for her performance, but for how her ongoing battle with Justin Baldoni may shape the reception of her work.

With court dates set, lawsuits mounting, and fans eager for answers, this real-life mystery may be even more dramatic than the fictional one playing out on screen.
