Veteran Ghazal Singer Bhupinder Singh Dies at 82

Famous ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh died in a hospital in Mumbai on Monday. The 82-year-old singer died of what is thought to be colon cancer and complications from Covid-19. His wife Mitali Singh confirmed his death to Indian media.

Bhupinder Singh was well-known for his ghazals, but he was also a very popular Bollywood playback singer. His songs “Duniya Chhute Yaar Na Chhute” from the 1982 classic “Dharam Kanta” and “Huzoor Is Kadar” from “Masoom” were both big hits (1983).

During his career, Bhupinder worked with a number of well-known musicians and singers. He had worked with Mohammed Rafi, R.D. Burman, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Bappi Lahiri, and others.

Bhupinder had also sung with the famous playback singer Lata Mangeshkar on songs like “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasman,” “Dil Dhoondta Hai,” and “Naam Gum Jayega.”

Mirza Ghalib has a lot to do with one of Gulzar’s most famous love songs. The first line of the song is a couplet by Ghalib. Gulzar changed the word “Jee” to “Dil” and made the couplet longer and more lyrical. Madan Mohan put it to music in the sweet Raag Keervani.

Bhupinder Singh’s slightly slow, languid voice, which moves just a couple of seconds behind the thought, went with this almost perfect mix of poetry and music. It was a phrase that had never been used before by male playback singers of the time.

Singh, who moved millions of people with this and other songs, died of a heart attack on Monday night. He had been in the hospital for 10 days.

“His condition got worse on Monday morning, so we had to put him on a ventilator,” said Dr. Deepak Namjoshi, the director of Criticare Asia Hospital. At 7:45 p.m., he had a heart attack and died.

Singh was born in Amritsar, but he grew up in the West Patel Nagar area of Delhi.

He started out working for All India Radio in Delhi and Doordarshan. At a party in Delhi, Madan Mohan heard Singh and asked him to try his hand at making music for movies. He gave Singh his first chance by putting him in “Haqeeqat” with Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, and Talat Mahmood. “Hoke majboor mujhe” was the name of the song, which got a lot of attention.

He then sang other songs, like “Do diwane shahar mein,” Naam gum jayega, Karoge yad to, Meethe bol bole, Kisi nazar ko tera intezaar aaj bhi, and Ek akela is shehar mein, Kisi ko mukammal, among others.

In his later years, he also sang ghazals, often with his wife, who is also a singer.

Since Bhupinder Singh died, there is a hole in the music world that will never be filled. People from all over the country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were saddened by his death. On Monday night, the PM wrote on Twitter, “Anguished by the death of Shri Bhupinder Singh Ji, whose songs have been remembered for decades. A lot of people liked what he wrote. His family and fans are in my thoughts at this sad time. Om Shanti.”
