“Armed with this knowledge, we’ll develop a model that can predict if a man’s prostate cancer is going to be aggressive based on a blood sample,” says Professor Ros Eeles, a leading researcher at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). “This will help clinicians overcome significant challenges, and could revolutionize the way prostate cancer is diagnosed, treated, and managed.”

Why Early Detection of Aggressive Prostate Cancer is Crucial

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the UK, with one in eight men receiving a diagnosis at some point in their lifetime. Every year, approximately 55,000 men are newly diagnosed with the disease. While many cases of prostate cancer grow slowly, with some men living with the condition for more than a decade without symptoms, there are others who develop aggressive forms of the disease. We’ve invested in this research so that, eventually, men and their doctors will be equipped with more of the information they need in order to find and treat the deadliest cancers as quickly as possible.”

Currently, doctors often rely on tools like the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, biopsies, and MRI scans to assess prostate cancer. While these tools can indicate the presence of cancer and give an idea of its stage, they are limited in their ability to predict the cancer’s future behavior.
