Who Were The Best Mexican Legends in La Liga?

Best Mexican Legends in La Liga

There are few more global leagues in world soccer than La Liga. Some of the most famous nations from across the world have been represented in the Spanish top-flight throughout history, and here have been no shortage of Mexican stars that have made their mark in the competition.

But, who are some of the legendary Mexican stars that have played in the Spanish top-flight during their career?

Rafael Marquez

There are potentially few more famous Mexicans to have played in La Liga than Rafael Marquez. The versatile defender is now the assistant coach of the Mexican national team, and he is still regarded as one of the best players to have come out of the country in history.

Marquez began his career with Atlas, before moving to Europe with AS Monaco. However, he would later make history in 2003 by becoming the first Mexican to represent Barcelona. Across seven seasons with the club, he would play over 240 matches.

Marquez would also play a key role in the success achieved by the team, winning the La Liga title on four occasions and the Champions League twice. His first success in the European competition also saw him become the first Mexican to win the Champions League.

He is currently the assistant coach for the Mexico national team.

Hugo Sanchez

Hugo Sanchez was one of the first Mexican players to make a name for himself in European soccer. Sanchez was one of the most revered strikers in the world throughout his career, and his natural ability to score spectacular goals ensured that he was a fan favorite. He is regarded as one of La Liga’s finest imports, and he is the fourth-highest scoring foreign player in La Liga history.

His journey in Spain started with Atletico Madrid in 1982, before he made the unlikely switch to cross-city rivals Real Madrid in 1985. During his time at the Bernabeu, Sanchez would win the La Liga title on five occasions, and also pick up silverware in the forms of the Supercopa de Espana, Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup. After leaving Real Madrid in 1992, he would later return to Spain for a one-season stay with Rayo Vallecano.

Jose Ramon Sauto

There has been a long link between Mexican players and Real Madrid, with the first player born in the nation to play for Los Blancos coming in the form of Jose Ramon Sauto. The midfielder signed for Real Madrid in 1933, and he would played over 140 games for the club.

His stay in Spain spanned the Civil War, meaning he would only play for the club for six seasons, despite being at the Bernabeu for eleven years. Despite this, he was handed the ultimate honor of captaining the team on two occasions.

Carlos Vela

Carlos Vela is one of the most talented modern players to come out of Mexico. Vela started his career with Guadalajara, before joining Arsenal’s youth academy in 2005. However, after being loaned out on countless occasions, he would eventually settle in Spain with Real Sociedad.

Across a six-season spell with the team, he played 250 times and scored 73 goals. Sociedad wasn’t the only Spanish team that Vela played for, as he also enjoyed a season-long stay with Osasuna. Vela ended his stay in Spain in 2018, joining LAFC, and forming an integral part of the team, which has won the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.

Javier Hernandez

Javier Hernandez is widely considered to be one of the greatest Mexican players of all-time. The striker is the all-time leading scorer for the nation, and he represented the team in three editions of the World Cup. At club level, he was brought to Europe by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010, becoming Manchester United’s first ever Mexican player.

Across a five-year stay at Old Trafford, Hernandez would win the Premier League title on two occasions and also be named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year. His stay in England ended in 2014 after joining Real Madrid on loan, and he scored seven goals in 23 appearances for the team. Hernandez would later return to Spain following stints with West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen after joining Sevilla. However, he would score just once in nine appearances.

Jesus Manuel Corona

One of the most recent Mexicans to have played in La Liga was Jesus Manuel Corona.

The winger came through the youth ranks at Monterrey, one of the best Mexican teams according to Liga MX Betting Sites

Then he joined Dutch side Twente in 2013. After a fine two season stay in the Netherlands, he moved to FC Porto in 2015.

Corona would achieve a period of success during a seven-season stay in Portugal, winning the top-flight title on three occasions. In 2022, he moved to La Liga, but he would struggle to settle at Sevilla. This was reflected by the fact that he scored just three goals in 28 appearances for the Spanish side.
