Europe’s Deadly Heat: Continent Warming Faster Than Rest of World

Europe Fastest Warming Continent Deadly Heat

Worrying news is coming out of Europe. A new report by European climate experts has revealed that the continent is heating up way faster than the rest of the world—we’re talking about twice as quickly! And unfortunately, this heat isn’t just making people sweat; it’s actually killing large numbers of people during the summer months.

Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and the United Nations conducted the analysis, which found that the number of heat-related deaths on the continent has increased by at least 30% in the last two decades. That’s a seriously alarming increase!

José Álvaro Silva from the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization points out that the impact on human health is especially bad in cities, where most people live. Not only do urban areas have a higher population density, but they also experience a faster rate of warming than rural areas. All those buildings and roads just soak up the heat and hold onto it for longer.

If you want a clear example of just how dangerous this heat can be for Europeans, look no further than the summer of 2023. In July, a brutal heat wave hit Southern Europe, making it feel like it was 110 degrees or hotter in nearly half of the region. That’s the kind of weather that can be deadly if people don’t have access to air conditioning.

Researchers are still calculating the final death toll from that July 2023 heat wave, but they almost certainly estimate it to be in the tens of thousands. In fact, one study estimated that over 60,000 people died prematurely because of the extreme heat. It’s a sobering reminder of just how serious this problem is.

Chris Hewitt, the head of the World Meteorological Organization, puts it bluntly: “Extreme heat causes the greatest mortality of all extreme weather.” In other words, when it comes to weather-related deaths, nothing beats the heat.

So, why is Europe warming up so much faster than other parts of the world? There are a few factors at play here. First, the continent is close to the Arctic, which is the fastest-warming region on Earth. Second, Europe is naturally situated near warm oceans and atmospheric currents; that’s why London’s winters are so much milder than Chicago’s, even though London is farther north.

However, as Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, explains, this also means that Europe is getting dangerously hot more quickly than places at similar latitudes. “We are still seeing new records broken all the time,” she says.

Many European cities are rushing to provide their residents with access to air conditioning and dependable electricity to power that AC on the hottest days as the dangers of heat become more apparent. After all, some of the most deadly heat waves worldwide happen when the power grid fails during extremely hot weather.

But there’s some good news in the new report, too. Europe is increasingly turning to solar and wind for its electricity, and these renewable sources are becoming more and more reliable. In fact, 2023 was the second year in a row that the continent generated more of its electricity from renewables than from burning fossil fuels. That’s a big deal!

This shift away from oil, gas, and coal for electricity is helping Europe cut its emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases, which will help curb future deadly warming. While this is a positive step, there remains a significant amount of work ahead.

So, what can we take away from all this? Well, for one thing, it’s clear that the climate crisis is already having a serious impact on human health, especially in Europe. The continent is warming up faster than anywhere else, and people are dying because of it.

However, it’s important to remember that we’re not powerless in the face of this problem. By investing in renewable energy and taking steps to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we can help slow down the warming trend and save lives in the process.

It’s not going to be easy, but it’s absolutely essential. The future of Europe—and the whole world—depends on it.
