How to Tell If a Wallet is Well Made?

How to Tell a Wallet Well Made

If you want your wallet to last, and if you want it to make a good impression, you’ll need to choose a wallet that’s well made. But what exactly does it mean to have a well made wallet? How can you tell the difference between a good one and a mediocre one? And where should you start your search?

Why Is It Important to Have a Well Made Wallet?

Why is it so important to have a well made wallet anyway? For many people, a wallet is little more than a practical, trivial item – and one where quality isn’t especially important.

But there are several reasons why you should be motivated to seek a wallet of higher quality:

  • Reliability. Wallets are designed to carry some of your most important documents and cards, as well as your money. You need something that can handle routine daily use, at minimum. Otherwise, you run the risk of your wallet falling apart unexpectedly.
  • Longevity. Similarly, you need to ensure your wallet lasts as long as possible. If you have to buy a new wallet every year, the costs will quickly escalate. It’s much better to buy a single wallet that’s going to last many years.
  • Image and professionalism. While most people won’t judge you purely on the appearance of your wallet, having a nice, quality-crafted wallet can assist with your image and professionalism. All other factors being equal, having a well made wallet makes you look better.

Starting Points

How do you start the process of determining whether a wallet is adequately made? Generally, you can trust your first impressions. If a wallet looks cheap or poorly constructed, that’s probably because it is. Even if you have only minimal experience looking at and handling wallets, you should be able to judge this for yourself.

You can also determine whether the wallet was crafted by hand or produced by manufacturing machine. Handmade wallets are often superior in quality to others, thanks to the skills and passions of the craftspeople who make them.

Things to Look for

Also, be on the lookout for these factors:

  • Material. First, pay attention to the material choice. Plastic and vinyl wallets have their purpose, but they tend to be cheaply made and somewhat unreliable, especially when compared to wallets of other materials. Metal wallets are very durable, but they also tend to be less flexible. For many people, the best choice is a leather wallet, which is durable, reliable, flexible, and often expertly crafted.
  • Artisans. As we’ve already noted, wallets made by hand tend to be superior in quality, but you also need to consider the artisan making those wallets. Some people are simply more talented or more experienced than others.
  • History. Speaking of experience, pay attention to the history of the individual or entity you plan on buying from. Is this an artisan or a company that has a long history of making reliable wallets? Or is this someone totally new to the game?
  • Reviews and testimonials. Reviews and testimonials, when authentic, are excellent indications of quality. Be sure to read reviews and testimonials from people who have bought these types of wallets in the past. Is the consensus that these are well made? Or are there critical flaws that prevent people from showering praise?
  • Photos. If you’re shopping online, photos are pretty much all you have. Zoom in and look at the details, and be sure to review photos submitted by customers in addition to marketing photos.
  • Feel. If you’re shopping in person, you can pick up the wallet and get a feel for it in your own hands. How does the material feel? Can you manipulate this wallet easily? Does it stand up to minor blemishes without issue?
  • Stitching and edges. Seams and stitches are agreat way to judge the quality of clothes, and the same principle holds true for wallets. Pay especially close attention to the edges to get a feel for the craftsmanship involved.
  • Flexibility. If you’re getting a wallet that isn’t made of metal, pay attention to the flexibility as well. You need a wallet with a little bit of give, so it can better withstand its daily duties and protect some of your most vital assets.

Your Unique Needs

Keep in mind that much of your choice depends on your unique needs. If you don’t have the money to buy a top-of-the-line wallet, there’s nothing wrong with choosing a wallet of slightly lower quality. If you prefer the look of a material that’s less flexible, less durable, or otherwise less reliable, go ahead and select it. Ultimately, you should strive to get a wallet that meets or exceeds all your wants and needs – whatever those happen to be.
