Top 5 Exciting Features Coming to iOS 18.2 Later This Year

iOS 18.2

Apple’s announcement of iOS 18 came with a flurry of promises, showcasing a range of new features that generated significant excitement among users. However, as the first beta versions of iOS 18.0 and iOS 18.1 have rolled out, it’s become evident that many of these anticipated features are not yet available. This has left many wondering when they can expect these updates to become part of their daily iOS experience.

Apple has indicated that most of these features will arrive “later this year,” leading to speculation that iOS 18.2 will be the update to watch. Historically, Apple has released the x.2 versions of iOS in December, marking the last major update of the year. If the features don’t appear in iOS 18.0 or 18.1, users can reasonably expect them in iOS 18.2, as it may be the final opportunity for Apple to deliver on its promises within 2024. While it’s possible that some features could be introduced in a later beta of iOS 18.1, this would be unusual, as major additions typically come in more significant updates.

ChatGPT Integration in Siri: A Major Leap in AI

One of the most anticipated features in iOS 18 is the integration of ChatGPT into Siri. This marks a significant evolution in Apple’s AI capabilities, moving beyond the basic voice recognition and response systems that have been standard in Siri for years. With ChatGPT, Siri is expected to offer more nuanced and intelligent responses, making interactions with Apple’s voice assistant more conversational and contextually aware.

During Apple’s latest earnings call, CEO Tim Cook addressed the staggered rollout of what Apple refers to as “Apple Intelligence” features, including the integration of ChatGPT. Cook highlighted that this integration is scheduled to arrive “by the end of the calendar year.” This timeline suggests that users might see this feature debut in iOS 18.2 or possibly even in a subsequent update if there are any delays.

The integration of ChatGPT is part of a broader strategy by Apple to enhance its AI capabilities. This is further underscored by reports that Apple is participating in OpenAI’s next funding round, indicating the company’s confidence in the future of this technology. By aligning with OpenAI, Apple is positioning itself at the forefront of AI advancements, which could have far-reaching implications for how users interact with their devices.

Genmoji: The Future of Personalized Emojis

Another exciting feature that was introduced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June is Genmoji. Genmoji represents a new way for users to express themselves, offering a more personalized and dynamic take on emojis. Despite the initial buzz, Genmoji has yet to make an appearance in any of the iOS 18 betas released so far.

While there have been no official announcements or concrete leaks regarding the release of Genmoji, it is widely speculated that this feature will arrive later this year. Some users have reported brief glimpses of the Genmoji interface in the recent betas of iOS 18.0 and 18.1, where parts of the feature appeared momentarily before disappearing. The fact that these elements have not been completely removed from the betas suggests that Genmoji is still in development and may be closer to release than initially thought.

However, Genmoji’s timeline contrasts with that of the new Siri experience, which is expected to be a more extensive update. According to sources, the all-new Siri, which will include major enhancements to its functionality and user interface, isn’t anticipated until iOS 18.4 in the Spring of 2025. This staggered approach to releasing major features shows Apple’s strategy of spreading out significant updates across multiple iOS versions to maintain user engagement and ensure stability.

Redesigned Mail App: A New Era for Email Management

Apple’s Mail app has been a staple of its ecosystem for years, providing users with a reliable, if somewhat basic, email experience. However, with iOS 18, Apple is set to revolutionize how users interact with their emails. The redesigned Mail app is one of the significant updates expected to roll out later this year, offering a fresh look and enhanced functionality.

The new Mail app will feature an updated design that aligns with Apple’s latest aesthetic choices, offering a cleaner and more modern interface. Beyond the visual overhaul, the app will introduce advanced categorization features, making it easier for users to manage their inboxes. This could include smart sorting options that automatically organize emails based on content, sender, or priority, allowing users to focus on what’s most important without getting bogged down by less critical messages.

According to Apple’s website, the redesigned Mail app will also integrate more deeply with other iOS features, such as Reminders and Calendar, allowing for a more seamless workflow. For example, users might be able to create calendar events or reminders directly from an email with a single tap, streamlining the process of managing tasks and appointments.

Forced Browser Choice in the EU: Adapting to New Regulations

In response to regulatory pressures from the European Union, Apple is making significant changes to how users select their default browser on iOS devices. Earlier this year, Apple introduced a new screen that allows EU users to choose their default browser more easily, but starting later this year, this screen will become a more prominent and recurring feature.

This change is part of Apple’s effort to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which seeks to promote fair competition and prevent tech giants from unfairly favoring their own services. As a result, if you currently use Safari as your default browser, you will be required to revisit the browser choice screen after updating to the latest version of iOS. Additionally, this setting will need to be reviewed annually or whenever you set up a new device, ensuring that users are consistently given the option to select their preferred browser.

Notably, this browser choice setting will not be preserved through backups, meaning that each time you set up a new device or restore from a backup, you will need to make your browser selection again. This approach is designed to keep the process transparent and prevent any default selections from being carried over without the user’s active consent.

Robot Vacuum Cleaner Support: Enhancing Smart Home Capabilities

In line with its ongoing expansion of smart home capabilities, Apple has announced that iOS 18 will include full support for robot vacuum cleaners. This update will be integrated into the Home app, allowing users to control a wide range of functions for their robot vacuums directly from their iPhone or iPad.

With this new feature, users will be able to manage core aspects of their robot vacuum’s operations, including power control, selecting cleaning modes, monitoring vacuum and mop functions, and checking the device’s charge status. This will make it easier for users to automate their cleaning routines and ensure that their homes are kept tidy with minimal effort.

Furthermore, Siri integration will allow users to issue voice commands to their robot vacuums, such as instructing the device to start cleaning or return to its charging station. This hands-free control adds an extra layer of convenience, making it simple to manage household tasks even when you’re away from home.

A Promising Future for iOS 18

As Apple continues to roll out iOS 18, users can expect a steady stream of new features and improvements that will enhance their experience. While some of the most anticipated features have yet to arrive, it’s clear that Apple is committed to delivering these updates before the end of the year. The upcoming iOS 18.2 release in December is likely to be a major milestone, bringing with it many of the promised features that have so far been missing.

From the integration of advanced AI capabilities in Siri to the introduction of Genmoji and the redesigned Mail app, iOS 18 is shaping up to be one of the most significant updates in recent years. As we look ahead to the remaining updates for 2024, it’s evident that Apple is focused on pushing the boundaries of what its devices can do, ensuring that users have access to the latest technology and the most innovative features.
