Menendez Brother Criticizes New Show for ‘Dishonest’ Portrayal of Parents’ Murder

menendez brother criticizes new show portrayal

Erik Menendez, one of the notorious Menendez brothers, has come forward to harshly criticize a new Netflix series about their case. He claims the show misrepresents both him and his brother Lyle, leading to a highly distorted and damaging portrayal of the tragic events surrounding the murder of their parents in 1989. Erik is not holding back, accusing the series’ creator, Ryan Murphy, and Netflix of intentionally creating false narratives that erase years of progress in understanding male trauma, specifically around sexual abuse.

The Menendez brothers, Erik and his older brother Lyle (whose full name is Joseph Lyle Menendez), made headlines in the early 1990s for the brutal killings of their parents, José and Mary “Kitty” Menendez. The brothers gunned them down inside their Beverly Hills mansion, a crime that shocked the nation and became a media sensation, resulting in two high-profile trials. Both brothers were convicted of murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, in recent years, the Menendez brothers have been working to seek reduced sentences, citing new legal arguments and re-examining aspects of their case, particularly around their claims of enduring years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father.

Netflix’s upcoming series, titled The Menendez Brothers, is set to premiere on October 7 and promises to shed light on the brothers’ version of events. The series, according to Netflix’s press materials, will explore the Menendez brothers’ allegations that their father was abusive, an element of the story that was hotly debated during their original trial but dismissed by many as a legal strategy. Despite the show’s apparent aim to explore these controversial issues, Erik Menendez is far from happy with how the story has been handled.

Erik Menendez: “Netflix Misrepresents the Truth”

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Erik’s wife, Tammi Menendez, Erik expresses deep dissatisfaction with the way the series has been crafted. He accuses Netflix and series creator Ryan Murphy of producing a show filled with “horrible and blatant lies,” particularly in its depiction of his brother Lyle.

“I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show,” Erik Menendez said in his statement. He goes on to argue that the show was created with “bad intent” and was purposely crafted to generate controversy and sensationalism at the expense of the truth.

While Netflix’s series is touted as giving viewers a new perspective by focusing on the brothers’ side of the story, Erik argues that this supposed “new perspective” distorts the facts rather than revealing them. Erik sees the show as yet another example of media exploitation that undermines the real pain and trauma that he and Lyle suffered during their childhood, particularly their claims that their father sexually abused them for years.

The Show Reopens Old Wounds and Revives Harmful Stereotypes

One of Erik’s main criticisms is the way the series revives outdated and harmful beliefs surrounding male sexual abuse. Erik contends that Netflix’s portrayal of the case harks back to the attitudes of the 1990s, when many people—including the prosecution in their trial—doubted that men could be victims of sexual abuse. During their trial, the Menendez brothers argued that their father had abused them for years, which contributed to their decision to kill their parents. However, the prosecution dismissed these claims, painting the brothers as spoiled, privileged young men motivated by greed and a desire for their inheritance.

“It is sad for me to know that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime have taken the painful truths several steps backward — back through time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape trauma differently than women,” Erik said in his statement.

He emphasizes that over the last two decades, significant progress has been made in understanding male sexual abuse and the unique ways in which men experience trauma. Erik believes that Netflix’s series disregards these advancements and instead perpetuates the harmful narrative that male victims of sexual abuse are less credible or less impacted by their experiences.

“Those awful lies have been disputed and exposed by countless brave victims over the last two decades who have broken through their personal shame and bravely spoken out,” Erik added. He views the Netflix series as a step backward in the ongoing battle to shed light on the realities of male sexual abuse and break down the stigma that often surrounds it.

Erik Menendez’s Plea for the Truth to Be Heard

Erik’s statement is not just a condemnation of the Netflix series, but also a heartfelt plea for the truth about their case—and more broadly, the truth about male sexual abuse—to be acknowledged. He argues that Netflix’s portrayal of their story undermines the hard-won progress that has been made in understanding childhood trauma, particularly the kind of abuse he and Lyle claim to have endured.

“How demoralizing to know that one man with power can undermine decades of progress in shedding light on childhood trauma,” Erik lamented. He expressed his deep frustration that the series distorts the truth, not just about his case but about the broader issue of violence against children.

Erik’s statement also touches on the long-lasting impact of violence and abuse, which he feels has been trivialized by the show’s sensationalized approach. “Violence is never an answer, never a solution, and is always tragic,” Erik said. He goes on to describe how violence against children creates countless “horrendous and silent crime scenes” that often remain hidden behind “glitter and glamor” until tragedy strikes.

He expressed gratitude to those who have supported him over the years, stating, “To all those who have reached out and supported me, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Erik’s message is clear: he wants the world to know that the real story of his and his brother’s lives is far more complex than the simplified, sensationalized version presented by Netflix.

Ongoing Legal Battles and Efforts for Sentence Reductions

While Erik’s statement focuses primarily on the Netflix series, it also comes at a time when the Menendez brothers are actively seeking reduced sentences. In recent years, their legal team has been arguing that the brothers should have been convicted of manslaughter rather than first-degree murder, a conviction that would have carried a much shorter sentence. According to their lawyers, the years of abuse the brothers endured at the hands of their father should have been given more consideration during their trial.

Had they been convicted of manslaughter, the Menendez brothers likely would have been released from prison by now. Instead, they are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, though their legal team continues to explore avenues for reducing their sentences or securing their release.

The release of the Netflix series could have a significant impact on public perception of the Menendez brothers’ case, potentially reigniting debates over whether their claims of abuse should have been taken more seriously at trial. For Erik Menendez, however, the show represents yet another obstacle in the long battle to have his and Lyle’s side of the story fully understood and acknowledged.

As the series premiere approaches, it remains to be seen how audiences and critics will react to The Menendez Brothers and whether Erik Menendez’s concerns will gain widespread attention. For now, Erik remains firm in his belief that the show does more harm than good, distorting the painful truths of their story and undermining the progress that has been made in understanding male trauma.
