Palestinian-American Teen Killed by Israeli Soldiers in West Bank

A 14-year-old Palestinian-American boy was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank on Sunday night, according to Palestinian authorities. Two other teenagers, also Palestinian-Americans aged 14 and 15, were wounded in the same incident in the village of Turmusaya, north of Ramallah.

Israeli Military Says Soldiers Responded to Stone Throwing

The Israeli military claimed the shooting occurred during a “counterterrorism operation.” According to their statement, soldiers opened fire after seeing three individuals allegedly throwing rocks at passing vehicles, which they said posed a danger to civilians on the nearby highway. One person was killed and two others were injured.

To support their claim, the military released a blurry video appearing to show three figures, one of whom seems to throw an object at the end of the clip. The video is brief and lacks clear detail. The military emphasized that it would continue operations in the West Bank to “protect residents in the area.

Victims Were Palestinian-American Teenagers

Ramallah Governor Laila Ghannam confirmed that the boy killed was a 14-year-old Palestinian-American. The Mayor of Turmusaya, Lafi Shalabi, said the two injured boys were also Palestinian-Americans.

According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, both injured teenagers were shot in the abdomen. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that one of them was seriously wounded while the other had less severe injuries. Both were taken to a hospital in Ramallah.

U.S. Response and Ongoing Investigations

On Monday, a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department confirmed the death of an American citizen in the West Bank and expressed condolences to the family. The spokesperson said the incident occurred during a “counter-terrorism operation” and that the Israeli military is investigating.

“Out of respect for the privacy of the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment at this time,” the official said.

The killing came just hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in the United States to meet with President Donald Trump.

A Pattern of Incidents Involving Palestinian-Americans

This is not the first time a Palestinian-American has been killed or injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank. Concerns about accountability have been raised for years.

In 2003, American peace activist Rachel Corrie was crushed by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza. She was trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes. An Israeli court later ruled her death an accident.

In 2022, well-known journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American, was shot and killed while reporting in the West Bank. Although she wore a vest clearly marked “Press,” a Media investigation suggested she was targeted by Israeli forces. Israel later refused to cooperate with a U.S. investigation into her death.

More recently, in February 2023, 17-year-old Mohammed Khdour, a U.S. citizen from Florida, was shot in the head while sitting in his car. His family said he had been taking a break from studying. The Israeli military redirected questions to the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, which did not comment.

Just weeks before Khdour’s death, another Palestinian-American teen, Tawfic Abdel Jabbar, who was raised in Louisiana, was also shot in the head. Israeli authorities claimed he was suspected of throwing stones, but his family strongly denied the accusation.

Intensified Military Campaign in the West Bank

The Israeli military has intensified its operations in the West Bank since late January, soon after a ceasefire in Gaza. These operations have led to large-scale displacement and growing criticism from human rights groups.

According to reports, around 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced during these operations. The Israeli military says it is targeting militant groups that have attacked Israeli forces and civilians. However, many Palestinians and rights groups argue that the campaign is indiscriminate, often harming civilians and destroying homes and infrastructure. They describe the ongoing situation as collective punishment.

In a concerning move, Israel even deployed tanks to the West Bank in late February — the first such deployment in two decades.
