Apple Watch 7 vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Which smartwatch is for you?
Trying to decide if you need a galaxy watch 4 or the Apple Watch Series 7 is a much easier decision than you might think. Both watches are designed for a very specific user that, frankly, boils down to one question: what kind of smartphone do you use?
We’ll explain below why that’s important and more.
The best watch for Apple users
Get the Apple Watch Series 7 if you’re using an iPhone and want the widest selection of customizable bands to choose from.
The best watch for android users
Get the Galaxy Watch 4 if you want the best Android watch and as many health sensors as possible.

The Apple Watch Series 7, like previous Apple Watch models, will continue to work only with an iPhone. And yes, you still need an iPhone to set up the Series 7. The only exception to the iPhone rule for Apple Watch users is if you’re setting up an Apple Watch for a family member, such as a child. If someone you know uses a mobile Apple Watch, you can talk to them and see their location. Even then, that Apple Watch will need to be set up with an iPhone before it can be used.

The Series 7’s screen is the largest screen Apple has ever used on an Apple Watch, with a choice of either a 41mm or 45mm option. The Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are available in 40mm or 44mm sizes, with a round display instead of the Apple Watch’s square design. Both versions include a new full-sized keyboard that you can use to reply to messages and emails, or take advantage of the increased screen space by using the new dials that provide more room for major complications and more information.

Not only does Apple routinely release new Apple Watch bands, but there are numerous third-party watch bands available for all Apple Watch models. Apple’s own watch bands range in price from $50 to $849 for a Hermès-branded band. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have strap options, but they’re not nearly as prominent or easily interchangeable as the Apple Watch.

Unlike previous Samsung wearables that worked with iPhone and Android devices, the Galaxy Watch 4 is only compatible with Android phones. The Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are the first two smartwatches to use Samsung’s Wear operating system, and part of that transition has meant the loss of iPhone support.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 has the same health sensors as the Apple Watch Series 7, plus the added option to read your body mass index and present that information to you on request. It’s a new feature for a portable device, though we’re not completely sold on it, as most scales already calculate the same information for you. But it’s certainly a feature that sets the Galaxy Watch 4 apart from the competition.

The heart of the debate between buying and Apple Watch Series 7 or Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 starts and ends with the type of phone you are using. If you own an iPhone, the Apple Watch is hands down the best smartwatch you can get. If you’re on Android, you’ve got a lot more options, but the Galaxy Watch 4 is the first with a next-generation OS that brings the best of Google’s ecosystem of apps and Samsung’s wearable knowledge and performance. The combination of the two makes up the best Android-based smartwatch we’ve seen yet.
However, when you start looking at which model of Apple Watch to get, or whether the Galaxy Watch 4 is better than an older WearOS watch, it’s not so clear. You have plenty of options from Fitbit to Garmin, but we think the Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 4 Classic offer the best experience for Android right now.
