Cowboys at Football Teams game preview: 5 things to watch
A real argument could be made that this could be the biggest game of the season yet for both teams. Two hated rivals vying for a divisional battle that will play a huge role in determining the fate of the NFC East this season. For the Cowboys, a win would mean silencing any sound that they don’t belong to the division’s class, and on the other hand, a win would bring a five-game winning streak and put the football team fully in the hunt for a division title. .
This has the potential to become the game of the week in the NFL, and the implications for the playoffs could also have major ramifications. It’s no exaggeration how big this win could be for both organizations this week, and it has everything to do with a hard-fought soccer game in DC
Here are five things to watch this week:
1. Trevon Diggs v Terry McLaurin.
Of all the wide receivers Trevon Diggs has dealt with this year, he still hasn’t had the chance to meet the one man who may have given him the toughest time during his rookie season. The difference in confidence and quality of the game, Diggs has shown this year compared to last year, is night and day. Diggs has nine interceptions in the league so far this year, so it’s a safe bet to think Diggs is stuck with something to prove against McLaurin and that Football Team offense. A match-up of two high-level players playing at the elite level is a must-see on TV.
2. What impact will Neville Gallimore make on the interior?
The Cowboys seem to be finally getting healthy here late in the season, and that comes with the expected addition of Neville Gallimore and his presence on the defensive line. There was a lot of promise for the sophomore defensive lineman coming out of camp, and the injury was a really unfortunate one as many thought this could be a breakthrough year for Gallimore. Now that he should be back, albeit presumably with a bit of pitch count to start, it will be interesting to see what kind of impact he can make in the backcountry where the Cowboys could use as much talent as possible.
3. Antonio Gibson against the running defense.
Gibson seemed to shine against the Cowboys defense last year, and the Cowboys defenders certainly haven’t forgotten his performance from last year as they use it as motivation for this week’s game. The Cowboys defense isn’t what it was last year, and with a ton of athletes, speed and aggressiveness on that side of the ball, the Cowboys will do everything they can to give the young running players a hard time. Outside of Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson is the WFT’s best weapon on offense and the Cowboys defense knows that, and will make it a point to avoid taking over this week’s game.
4. Can the offense get their groove back?
The defense for the most part did their job and kept this team afloat at times, but the strength of this team has always had to be their attack. It’s time for the offense to start clicking again, and it should happen this Sunday. The Cowboys should have all 11 starters playing and with a mini-bye between games; there must be a freshness and rejuvenation within the unit to return to winning football. At some point you look at the attack in its entirety and wonder if the lack of offensive production is a slump due to a multitude of problems, or if this is who they have become as a unit. This attack is powerful enough to take shot after shot with any team in the league and Sunday would be a good time to remind us all of that high power.
5. Win this game and the NFC East race curtain may close.
The reason this game is so important is so obvious, but it doesn’t mean the point shouldn’t be made. Your division rival is scorching hot right now, you just finished your own two game loss streak to be on the right side but it doesn’t matter on Sunday as a big statement in this division race will be on the one made in some other way. Either the Cowboys are going to make some serious space between themselves and the rest of the division, or the WFT is going to tighten this thing up and close it down the trajectory. If the Cowboys win this game, the division can be seeded before Santa even comes down the chimney, otherwise we can have a ride through the New Year. The Cowboys would find it most beneficial to deal with business on Sunday to clear up any doubts.
