In-depth Analysis
Our overall rating is not an average of the sub scores below.
Nail Polish cast: Arjun Rampal, Manav Kaul, Anand Tiwari, Rajit Kapur, Madhoo Shah, Samreen Kaur
Nail Polish director: Bugs Bhargava Krishna
Nail Polish rating: Three and a half stars
The Zee5 original film, which claims to be based on real events, veers this way and that as it patiently and methodically proceeds to its unconventional ending.
Nail Polish is an intriguing crime-legal thriller that manages to sustain its twists and turns, with minimal swerves. Popular, much-liked sports coach Veer Singh (Kaul) is accused of the heinous rape-and-murder of two children. But what seems to be an open-and-shut case, going by the evidence, turns into a murky story of past trauma, split personalities, and questionable redemption.
It isn’t possible to miss the direct reference to Psycho (1960) in the latest ZEE5 film Nail Polish. In fact, the closing shot is a nod to it. Despite getting inspired by one or more thrillers preceding it, Nail Polish has its own elements that drive home the narrative and make it a decent watch for crime film lovers.
On the defense side is Sidharth (Arjun Rampal), who is hired by a voice on the phone for reasons that remain flimsy. Sidharth expertly demolishes the mountain of proof against Veer, but even he has to take a pause when Veer springs his biggest surprise yet.
A few things are overstated (a predictable close-up with a character smiling knowingly), a couple of facts are fuzzily presented, but despite the occasional eye-roll, Nail Polish, buoyed by a wonderful performance from Kaul, and ably supported by the rest, keep us engaged. Great to see Madhoo back in the movies. That’s a bonus.
Nail Polish Movie Review: Watch or Not:
- It is a must-watch movie.
- On the surface, Nail Polish seems to revolve around a simple murder trial, but there is more to it than meets the eye.
- Nail Polish can be enjoyed for various reasons, but most of all for its gentle salute to the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock.
