Understanding Dress Codes – News Online 100
Party season, while exciting, brings dress codes…
When an invitation comes in by mail or email with a dress code to decipher, panic can set in. So here’s my guide to understanding dress codes from black tie to smart casual…
smart casual
Of all the dress codes, this seems to be the one that boggles most minds! But smart casual is a great opportunity to try a new trend or put together a new outfit from items in your wardrobe that you wouldn’t normally wear together. For example, a wide A-line skirt (which you might wear to work) with a pretty cashmere sweater, a bold statement necklace and heeled ankle boots.
As a rule, it is always better to be tastefully overdressed than underdressed on formal occasions since there are so few opportunities to do so.
black tie
I always think the guys have it so easy when it comes to this dress code. Black tie is semi-formal which means that while you have to be smart, you can also be creative with an outfit. Traditionally, it requires a longer dress, otherwise you will start venturing into the realm of cocktail dresses. A black-tie event is a great time to opt for color, from head to toe fuchsia or emerald green if you dare, but wear something colorful so that you at least stand out from the men!
Cocktail
Up the sexiness for a cocktail night. Understanding dress codes, especially cocktails, is about hitting the right note. This is an event made for satin, silk or taffeta. Don’t go too far on the ball gown route and opt for a cropped style with a modern, sexy shape that you can dance to. Pair with your most glitzy and glamorous jewellery, killer heels and a fabulous clutch big enough for just your phone, keys and lipstick.
evening wear
Now we are talking about super chic! In general, it’s all about a long, flowy dress, whether you’re going for a ball gown or something a little less daring, now is the time to give your very best. Roll out your very best gear, if you have diamonds or designer heels now is the time to rock them. Get your hair done in a style that flatters and shows off your pretty dress and if ever there was a time for bold red lipstick, this is it.
morning dress
This style of dressing is usually a requirement before 5pm, often seen at weddings or a day at the races. It’s another easy one for the gentlemen. This dress code leans a little more towards functionality than the others, clothing for the weather is key. Choose the right footwear depending on the time of year. A woman in strappy sandals sliding and sliding down a muddy walkway to a country church never looks good. An understated and sophisticated dress (or skirt, pants and top) with a jacket is a good option, hats are also something to consider if that’s your style.
I would love it if you share it in the comments below. Did you get an invite with a dress code that you weren’t sure where to start with? Or is there an occasion you attended where you felt you were wearing the wrong thing? Have these tips helped you understand dress codes?
