WooSox falls to Mets in series finale
Worcester fell behind early, as a pair of three-run innings by Syracuse led to a 9-4 loss at NBT Bank Stadium on Sunday.
The WooSox (66-52) fell to the Mets for the first time in nearly a month in the series, but returned home with an 18-6 record over the last 24 games.
Syracuse (47-69-1) took the lead in the second inning off of Worcester-starter Daniel Gossett, as Travis Blankenhorn led off with a solo homer and four batters later, Martin Cervanka sent a 3-2 pitch over the left fence for a two – runshot that made it 3-0.
The Mets extended their lead in the third inning when Brandon Drury sent a shot to the center that bounced off Tate Matheny’s glove for a homerun to make it 4-0.
Worcester narrowed the lead to 4-2 in the fourth, when Jarren Duran doubled and finished third on a single by Jonathan Araúz. Duran scored on Franchy Cordero’s double and Joey Meneses followed with a single down the middle to get Araúz at the plate.
But Syracuse moved the game aside in the fifth, as Gossett gave up a single, double and walk to load the bases and set up a two-run single to Brandon Drury. Drury later scored on a wild pitch, as Gossett gave up seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
Update on COVID-19 injured list
Worcester had three players on Boston’s COVID-19 injured list on Sunday who were in rehab.
Duran hit 1 for 4 with a double, Araúz was 1 for 3 with a single and Christian Arroyo was 1 for 5 with an infield-single.
