Crime dramas are some of the most popular TV shows on Netflix at the moment.
The shows are constantly attracting a wide audience due to their intense and thrilling themes.
It also got me thinking about the lesser-known, underrated crime movies. The great ones that never seem to quite make it into anyone’s all-time list.
Here are 5 of the most underrated crime and mystery web-series and Movies.
1. Criminal: France
Criminal: France is a police procedural anthology series consisting of twelve episodes, with three episodes set in each of four countries, filmed in local languages – France, Spain, Germany, and the UK.
Set within the confines of a police interrogation room, French investigators engage in intense games of psychological cat-and-mouse with their accused suspects to find the answers they need in order to solve their cases.
2. Seven Seconds
Seven Seconds is an American crime drama web television series, based on the Russian film The Major written and directed by Yuri Bykov.
The series, created, executive produced, and showrun by Veena Sud, follows the people involved in investigating the death of a young black boy and the boy’s family as they reel after the loss.
When 15-year-old black cyclist Brenton Butler dies in a hit-and-run accident — with a white police officer behind the wheel of the vehicle — Jersey City explodes with racial tension. This crime drama explores the aftermath of the accident, which includes an attempted cover-up by the police department and a volatile trial.
3. Damnation
Damnation is an American period crime drama set in 1931 at the height of the Great Depression. As labor strikes and wage wars spread, the show focuses on a man named Seth Davenport, a drifter who poses as a preacher. Davenport rallies workers to stand up against their greedy bosses and predatory banks.
4. Hinterland
We really love this series: It’s a noir drama story of a detective who used to work in London and now works in the rural areas of Wales and running from his past. If you are into atmospheric, complex narratives similar to Scandinavian crime fiction, you will enjoy this. This series will keep you on the edge the whole time.
5. The Death of Dick Long
The Death of Dick Long is a 2019 black comedy-drama film directed and produced by Daniel Scheinert and written by Billy Chew.
The film stars Michael Abbott Jr., Virginia Newcomb, Andre Hyland, Sarah Baker, Jess Weixler, Roy Wood Jr., and Sunita Mani. It premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2019, and was released by A24 on September 27, 2019.
