Shibori DIY in 8 Easy Steps!
What is a summer wardrobe without a shirt. Go half-hipster by following this DIY to get a genius tie and dye shirt.
Here’s How!
Step 1: Pick up a white cotton or natural fiber T-shirt that you want to spice up. Spread the t-shirt out on a flat surface with the front facing down.
Step 2: We use the Arashi method of dyeing where the fabric/shirt has to be rolled tightly around a cylindrical object such as PVC, piping or even a broomstick.
Step 3: Wrap it tightly with a full length rope or wire. Start wrapping from the bottom and come back down once you reach the top.
Step 4: Then pinch the shirt down onto the pole. Pinch it down as much as possible to create a crumpled effect on the fabric.
Step 5: Soak your shirt in cold water, then dip your shirt in the dye according to the dye instruction. Keep in mind that the longer you leave the shirt in, the stronger the color will be.
Step 6: Once you’ve let the T-shirt rest in the dye for the required time, remove the pole and rinse the tied fabric in cool water until it runs clear.
Pro tip: Add your food coloring to water and not the other way around to avoid splashing. Also, the dye will appear much darker when wet, but the color will lighten as it gets oxidized and dries out.
Step 7: Carefully unpack the T-shirt and let it dry completely.
Step 8: You have successfully completed the arashi shibori technique. Show off your latest DIY with your white denim cut-offs paired with a hipster headband to give that breezy summer feel!
